Welcoming the Next Generation

On Wednesday 24th July, Bakers opened its doors to a group of enthusiastic and curious individuals keen to hear about kickstarting a career in the print industry. Our Apprenticeship Open Day gave prospective apprentices the opportunity to experience life inside one of the UK’s most advanced and diverse label and packaging manufacturers.

With ten guests joining us at our Brentwood facility, the day was packed with presentations, factory tours, hands-on insights.

Tom Baker, our Finance and Development Manager, kicked things off with an introduction to the world of print and packaging. From its heritage and impact, to the future of digital innovation and sustainability. “We want to show that print isn’t just about paper and ink. It’s about creativity, technology, engineering, and opportunity,” he said. “There’s so much talent and potential in this next generation, and we’re excited to help them find their path.”

Visitors learned about the apprenticeship opportunities currently available at Bakers, including:

Print Technician Apprentice (read more)

Post-Press Technician (read more)

Lean Manufacturing Operative (read more)

They were also given a full behind-the-scenes tour of our label, flexible packaging (BakPac), and Baker Materials departments before hearing from a special guest – Charlotte Carter. Charlotte recently completed her BPIF Business Administration Apprenticeship here. She shared her journey and answered questions in an informal Q&A session.

Attendee Speed Interviews

The Apprenticeship Open Day concluded with speed interviews, giving each attendee a chance to speak directly with members of our management team. These informal interviews offered attendees interview experience and an opportunity to connect.

Organised by our HR Manager Clare Coles, the event was a great success. It showcased not only our commitment to training and development, but also the vibrant culture that sets Bakers apart. It was fantastic to welcome such a strong turnout at our recent Apprenticeship Open Day – with double the number of attendees compared to previous years, it was our most successful event yet.
We currently have three apprentices progressing well through their programmes, each making a valuable contribution to their respective teams. Apprenticeships continue to play an important role in developing future talent within the business, and we remain committed to supporting the next generation. We’re excited to see where the latest group of applicants will take us. If their enthusiasm is anything to go by, we’re confident they’ll follow in the footsteps of our past and present apprentices, who have all proven to be real assets to the company.”

Each participant has now been invited to formally apply for one of our apprenticeship roles starting in September.

We’d like to thank everyone who attended for their enthusiasm and interest. We’re excited about what’s ahead—for them, and for the future of our industry.
